welcome to pawsome adventures
todays topic will be on unwanted attention and discrimination, what is discrimination ? is it legal ?
discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability,
is discrimination legal? Federal anti-discrimination laws set minimum national standards all states must comply with; however, states and localities may pass additional laws and regulations that increase protections. Discriminatory treatment is only illegal if a person is part of a legally defined protected class s
what should i do if someone is discriminating against me ? well you should try to educate them on the laws such as the American's with disabilities act also know as the a.d.a law which protects people with disabilities as well as people with service animals .
unwanted attention
what is unwanted attention and how can i deal with it appropriately ?
Unwanted attention is any attention that is given to you or your service dog at any time you do not want any attention. some examples of unwanted attention can include someone petting your service dog or looking at your service dog without prior permission which can actually be very distracting for a service dog and can lead to injuries of the handler and or the service dog .
the best way to go about confronting someone about unwanted attention is to be straight foward about it what i have learned in the past 7 years as a service dog handler is to not be afraid to advocate for yourself and your service dog if you know someone is distracting your service dog speak up and say NO DO NOT INTERACT WITH MY SERVICE DOG ! YOU'RE RISKING MY SERVICE DOG AND MY OWN SAFETY! , this is one of the hardest thing i had to learn is to speak up when i was uncomfortable with people interacting with my service dog in most states its actually a felony to distract a service animal in a few states its unfortunately only a misdemeanor, in my state that i live in it is only a misdemeanor as much as we wish that it would be a felony.
